Surgery and admission planning

Once a final decision is made that you will undergo heart surgery, you will be put on the waiting list. We understand that waiting for heart surgery can be stressful, but we make every effort to reduce the waiting time. You can rest assured that your medical condition has been carefully assessed by the cardiac team. How long you have to wait for your surgery always depends on your symptoms and the intended operation.

For non-urgent procedures, you will be notified in writing of the week in which we plan the operation. Emergencies may affect the surgery planning, which may delay your surgery. Consequently, we cannot give you an exact surgery date in advance.

Shortly before your admission, you will receive a phone call from UZ Leuven’s admissions department. They will let you know exactly where and when you are expected for your operation.

If your symptoms should increase while waiting, do not hesitate to contact your GP or cardiologist.
