Module 1: Managing diabetes during your weight management journey

If you have Type 2 diabetes, losing weight can significantly improve your blood sugar control and overall health. This module will help you understand how to safely manage your diabetes while working toward your weight goals.

How weight loss affects your diabetes

When you lose weight, your body becomes more sensitive to insulin, which helps control your blood sugar levels. Even a modest weight loss of 5-10% of your body weight can make a significant difference in your diabetes management.

Benefits you may experience:

  • Better blood sugar control
  • Reduced need for diabetes medications
  • Lower risk of diabetes complications
  • Improved energy levels
  • Better sleep quality

Monitoring your blood sugar during weight loss

As you lose weight, your blood sugar levels may change, especially if you’re taking diabetes medications. Regular monitoring becomes even more important during this time.

Check your blood sugar more frequently during the first few weeks of your program, especially if you’re taking insulin or other diabetes medications. Your care team may need to adjust your medication doses as you lose weight.

When to check your blood sugar:

  • Before meals
  • 2 hours after meals
  • Before and after exercise
  • Before bedtime
  • If you feel symptoms of low or high blood sugar

Recognizing and managing low blood sugar

As your body responds to weight loss, you may experience low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) more frequently, especially if you’re taking certain diabetes medications.

Signs of low blood sugar: Shakiness, sweating, confusion, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or feeling very hungry. If your blood sugar is below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L), treat immediately with 15g of fast-acting carbohydrates.

Quick treatment for low blood sugar:

  • 3-4 glucose tablets
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) of fruit juice
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 5-6 pieces of hard candy

Wait 15 minutes, then recheck your blood sugar. If it’s still low, repeat the treatment.

Working with your healthcare team

Your diabetes management may need adjustments as you progress through your weight management program. Stay in close contact with your healthcare providers.

Schedule regular check-ups with your diabetes care team every 3-6 months, or more frequently if recommended. Share your blood sugar logs and discuss any concerns about your medications or symptoms.
